Global Mercury Treaty One Step Closer to Ratification

Jan. 2013 – More than 140 Nations agreed to the legally binding text on mercury regulation after 4 years of negotiation.  The new “Minamata Convention on Mercury” will be ready for signature in Oct. 2013 in Japan.  Many in the environmental community say the text needs to go further on enforcement and safeguards, but this still is a huge step in the right direction after years of talks.  Find the official UNEP press release and meeting reports here.
